Hadham wins House Cup for 2019-2020

We celebrated Hadham (Red) winning the House cup with our annual Balloon Pop.

Last year we raised £5,643.03 for the following charities:
International charity – Sparkle Malawi
National – The Firefighters Charity
Local - Essex and Herts Air Ambulance
We have decided to raise funds for the same charities again this year, as our fund raising efforts were cut short due to lockdown.

Halloween

On Wednesday 23 October we had our first House Charity day which was Halloween themed. All of our students were in non-uniform and some staff and Sixth Form students were dressed up in Halloween costumes!
There were plenty of events that took place such as the traditional Halloween cake stall, pumpkin competition and spooky song off.
The winners of the Pumpkin Competition were:
Bat = Erin Hinken and Frankie Gilder
Tree = Daisy Evans, Grace Limrick and Holly Thompson
A massive well done to them for getting involved! House points have been awarded for this.
At lunch time the Sixth Form House Captains ran the Halloween live maze. This maze was held in the drama studio and included live actors. The Year 7- 10 students who took part, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Essex Air

Essex and Herts Air Ambulance

The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance kindly came in to teach Birchwood High School students basic lifesaving skills techniques. They ran three, one hour sessions for Year 8, Year 12 and Year 13. The Air ambulance went through different scenario’s on how to spot when someone is in trouble and would then require help. As part of the sessions they taught students how to use basic CPR and for the older students they included training on how to use a defibrillator. They talked about the sightings of the defibrillators across Bishop’s Stortford including the one which is based in our sports hall at Birchwood.

The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance have been Birchwood’s local charity of the year, and they were invited to the school as part of Feel Good Week, during which everyone helps to raise funds for all of our charities including Sparkle Malawi and National Firefighters Charity.

House raises £3803 for Gosh and Edie's Butterfly Appeal

GOSH has been our national charity this year and is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare.

The hospital is dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses. Judy Kuhl, an ambassador of the charity, came into talk about the work they do and to accept a cheque from us. Thank you for coming in Judy!

Edie’s Butterfly Appeal was our local charity. They give Hope Through Research For All Children Fighting Ependymoma. Since Edie was diagnosed with ependymoma in 2011 they have been working tirelessly to raise awareness and much needed funds for their research.

Both charities received a cheque for £1,901.70.
